Desert Details … This week’s ARCA Menards Series race at Phoenix Raceway marks Holmes’ first appearance at the one-mile banked oval. However, Holmes has made 28-career starts on tracks up to one mile in length, collecting eight top-five and 24 top-10 finishes.

Rearview Mirror: Daytona International Speedway … Holmes started the 80-lap affair from the 19th position and quickly picked up the draft enroute to the front of the field. The Munford, Ala., native visited pit road under caution on lap 22 for fuel only and rejoined the racing surface in the 12th spot. After the ensuing restart, Holmes found a few drafting partners along the bottom groove of the racetrack. Just three laps later, Holmes maneuvered into the second position and set his sights on the leader. The 22-year-old driver made his move on lap 33 and assumed the lead. Holmes continued to lead until a caution slowed the field on lap 40 when crew chief Shane Huffman called his driver to pit road for fuel only. The No. 23 team restarted second and maintained position until Holmes was shuffled out of the draft in the final laps of the race and finished ninth.

BRET HOLMES QUOTE:
Talk about heading to Phoenix Raceway this week and never having raced there.

“It’s going to be really cool to race there on Friday night. It’s a track I don’t have experience at but is one that I’ve always wanted to log laps at. Shane (Huffman, crew chief) has been there a lot, so I’m definitely going to rely on him. He’ll be able to help me get used to the line and give me advice on how to get around the track. I think there are a few other drivers that have raced at Phoenix (Raceway) in the past and will have a little bit of an upper hand on the rest of the field, but I think we’ll be just fine. It’s a different type of track. Phoenix (Raceway) has that dogleg. That makes for some exciting racing. It would be fun to be able to get four or five-wide like they do in other series that race there. I’ll approach this race like I do any other race. I try to learn as much as possible from watching video and talking with other people that have experience there. It’s a starting point for practice, and you learn the rest from there.”
