Nic of many hats; prepping for full-pull at Bret Holmes Racing

TOLEDO, Ohio (Jan. 2, 2018) -- If you haven't met Nic Moncher yet, chances are you've seen him at the track. In fact, for the last 13 years he's been all over the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series garages. PR-Marketing positions, spotter, mechanic, gopher, grunt, front tire changer, journalist, general manager, team manager…you name it…Moncher has covered the gamut. His career has also taken him full circle, back to ARCA full-time where he's been hired as the General Manager for Bret Holmes Racing (BHR) for the 2018 season.

"Got a call from Bret Holmes Racing at the end of the '17 season," said Moncher. "They asked me to manage the Bret Holmes Racing team for '18. We brought in Matt Weber as crew chief and started putting all the pieces and parts together. I'm in charge of putting the entire team in place."

One of the first orders of business was relocating the team.

"We moved shops on the GMS (Racing) campus. We'll have a full alliance with GMS…engineering, chassis, body, paint…the whole deal. We're basically a full satellite team at GMS."

Moncher, who will turn 31 June 22, would be familiar with the GMS landscape having already been a part of their organization. In 2013, Gallagher Motorsports (predecessor to GMS Racing) hired Moncher in a Public Relations-Marketing role. That included wearing a lot of different hats…changing tires too. After a solid start, Moncher got promoted to General Manager at GMS in August of '13.

"In '14 I orchestrated the purchasing of the Truck assets from RCR (Richard Childress Racing). That's when we transitioned the name to GMS. We signed Joey Coulter to run the full season in the 21 truck…Spencer (Gallagher) and Max Gresham also shared a ride."

Gallagher also ran ARCA full-time in the 23 car but got hurt during the season. That's when GMS hired Grant Enfinger to finish off the year. Fortunately, Gallagher recovered in time to compete in the ARCA finale at Kansas where he drove the 23 machine to Victory Lane. Enfinger also answered with ARCA wins at Berlin and DuQuoin, setting the stage for 2015.

"Spencer was full-time in Trucks and Grant came back full-time in ARCA (in '15). We also had Brandon Jones, and Austin and Ty Dillon splitting the 33 Truck ride. Got my first pole in the Trucks with Ty at Daytona and our first win with Austin at New Hampshire. With Grant on the ARCA side…six wins, three poles and championship. It was a good year."

And it was during that '15 season that Moncher oversaw the entire ARCA program, handling all the day-to-day duties, including working on the competition side with Enfinger's crew chief Jeff Stankiewicz.

At the beginning of the '16 season, Moncher oversaw the selling of the GMS's ARCA assets to Bret Holmes Racing. With that task complete, he parted ways with GMS and went to work with Austin Hill Racing as his team manager. Austin Hill Racing merged with Young's Motorsports in '16 with Hill and Tyler Young sharing the ride in the 02 Truck. In 2017, Chad Finley Racing also operated out of the Austin Hill-Young's Motorsports shop. Finley called upon Moncher to spot for him in the five ARCA races he competed in. It was a good call. Finley won at Nashville with Moncher on the spotters stand.

At the dawn of the '18 season, Moncher has circled back around with GMS Racing…sort of a homecoming as he prepares to set sail on a full ARCA schedule with Bret Holmes Racing.

"I’m really excited to be back in ARCA full-time. We're working on our superspeedway and back-up cars for the Daytona test…working on our short track pieces trying to get ahead of the curve. I've always said that ARCA and the Trucks are my two favorite series. We like the rules package in ARCA…the tires, bodies, Ilmor engines. It all keeps cost down…it's a great little series."

Needless to say, Moncher is really excited for the new season. His driver of the No. 23 Chevrolet, Bret Holmes, is also thrilled to be coming back for another ARCA full pull.

"Bret's very excited about the season. He's really in tune with his team and doing all he can to prepare for the '18 season. He's working out every day, paying attention to his nutrition, taking all the extra steps to be ready, especially for that summer stretch…11 races in a row. He's taking the season very seriously. He's also still a student at Auburn (University) so he's got his hands full with that too. We as a team want to take as much off his plate as we can and put it back in his hands when he grabs hold of the steering wheel."

Moncher, like a lot of crew members chasing the racing dream, is transplanted from his Ohio roots to Charlotte. Born in Sylvania, Ohio in 1987, the family migrated from the Toledo area to eventually Sandusky, Ohio when he was in the 6th grade. Oddly, nobody in Moncher's family was involved in racing growing up.

"Nobody in my family liked racing. Then I went to Sandusky Speedway with some friends…went to the Hy-Miler Nationals…big super modified race. I saw a billboard for Sealmaster and looked it up and saw that there was a NASCAR Truck team in Sandusky. Once my dad realized I was really getting into racing, he started taking me to MIS for the August Cup races. From '99 through '05. We had season tickets in turns 3 and 4.

"Once I learned that ThorSport Racing was in Sandusky, I found somebody that knew somebody to try and get in there any way I could. I finally got an interview with David Pepper…he said I'd be taking the Rusty Wallace way of racing…start at the bottom. I did a lot of grunt work…take the trash out, clean floors, clean the bathrooms…whatever they asked me to do, that's what I did. Then I got to clean Trucks…that was my first experience touching the Trucks."

Then Moncher got what he had been dreaming about.

"In '05 I went to my first race with them…went to Bristol with their Truck team."

Moncher hasn't stopped going to the track ever since. ThorSport increased his responsibilities.

"They started teaching me to weld, clean oil lines, radiators, hoses. By then I decided I wanted to get into the business side so I enrolled at Shawnee State (University) in Portsmouth (Ohio). Then I got accepted to Belmont Abbey. I went to North Carolina and never looked back."

Moncher was one of the first students to go through Belmont Abbey's new motorsports management program, the first of its kind in the country. He also graduated in 2010 with a bachelor's degree in Business Management with a concentration in marketing.

Then just for good measure, Moncher went to 'pit crew school.'

"I went to pit crew schools before there were pit crew schools…graduated from DST."

In the meantime, Moncher had been working several internships through Belmont Abbey at Sirius XM Radio in the PRN studios which led to an internship at Ganassi Racing in PR-Marketing. Then he went to Daytona in 2008 with Venturini Motorsports through the DST school program. It didn't take Venturini Motorsports long to figure out that there was value in the new guy.

"After that, Billy (Venturini) offered me a job. I started full-time with them while I was going to school. I was a mechanic and pit crew guy and started helping with their driver development program with Gibbs (Racing) in '09. Got my first win with Joey Logano in the ARCA car at Rockingham."

In December of '09 Moncher went to work in the front office for Coulter Motorsports. After his graduation from Belmont Abbey in 2010, Moncher was free to travel and went to all the Camping World Truck Series races in '11 and '12, working with Joey Coulter through the Richard Childress Racing alliance. It all led to his deal with Gallagher Motorsports in 2013, and the rest is history.

After all that, the well-rounded Moncher says he's just getting warmed up.

"I'm more excited about racing than I've ever been. All my friends work in racing…my girlfriend works in racing…everything's in racing for me. It's a way of life…it's where I want to be. I even love the travel aspect…I like going back to all those classic tracks that ARCA runs…Salem, Berlin, Nashville, the Fairgrounds…and I like checking out the new places too. I love the ARCA schedule and I can't wait to get back on it. We're all excited about the new season."
